If your old garage door is on its last legs, the first question is usually the same: what type of door should I go for? At J & J Garage Doors we've been fitting and repairing garage doors across Glasgow and the surrounding areas since 2010, and we get asked this every week. Here's a plain-English guide to the three most popular choices and who each one suits.

Up & Over Doors (from £900, including VAT and fitting)

The up & over is the classic British garage door. It's one solid panel that tilts outwards and slides up into the roof space of the garage. It's simple, strong and the most affordable way to get a smart new door.

An up & over suits you if:

  • you want a reliable door at a sensible price

  • you're replacing an existing up & over and want a like-for-like swap

  • you have room in front of the garage for the door to swing out as it opens

They come in a range of styles and colours, and they can be manual or fitted with an electric operator later on.

Sectional Doors (from £1,450, including VAT and fitting)

A sectional door is made of horizontal panels that run straight up on tracks and sit flat against the garage ceiling. Because it doesn't swing outwards, you can park right up to the door, which is handy on a short driveway.

A sectional suits you if:

  • your driveway is short or you park close to the garage

  • you want a modern, high-end look

  • you'd like more usable headroom and width inside the garage

Sectional doors are a popular upgrade, and they pair well with an electric operator so you can open the door from the car.

Electric Roller Doors (from £1,700, including VAT and fitting)

A roller door is made of slim slats that roll up into a compact box above the opening. It takes up very little space inside the garage and opens straight up, so it never touches the driveway or the ceiling.

A roller door suits you if:

  • you use the garage roof space for storage

  • you want push-button convenience every day

  • you have an unusual opening or limited room inside

Every roller door we fit comes electric as standard.
