Garage Door Remote Problems

There's nothing worse than pressing the button on a wet night and getting nothing back. Remote problems on electric garage doors are common, and often it's something simple.

What to Do If Your Garage Door Fails

  • Don't force it: pulling or prising a stuck door can cause more damage or injury.

  • Leave springs and cables alone: they're under high tension and dangerous to handle.

  • Keep clear: if the door is hanging unevenly, keep children, pets and cars away.

  • Electric doors: try fresh batteries in the remote and check the motor's power supply.

  • Take a photo and note what happened, such as a bang, a noise or a sudden stop.

  • Give us a call on 0141 573 4162 and describe the fault.

Repair or Replace?

Many faults can be put right with a repair. If your door is very old, badly damaged or keeps going wrong, a replacement may be better value in the long run. We supply and fit new doors, mainly from Hörmann and Garador, so we can give you a fair view of both options.

Common Garage Door Faults We Repair

Snapped springs and cables: a loud bang, a door that feels very heavy or hangs lopsided. These parts are under high tension, so leave this to a professional.

Door won't open or close: a jam can come from a broken spring or cable, runners or tracks, a lock fault or a motor issue. We'll find the cause and explain your options.

Remote and motor faults: check the remote batteries and the motor's power first. If that doesn't fix it, we can look at the remote, receiver, motor or door mechanism.

Noisy or sticking doors: grinding, squealing or jerky movement usually means a worn or misaligned part. Catching it early stops small problems becoming bigger ones.

Damaged panels: depending on the door and the damage, we can repair or replace the affected part. If a new door makes more sense, we'll tell you honestly.

Lock problems: stiff, broken or seized locks, lost keys and handles that no longer engage can leave your garage insecure. We can check the lock and its mechanism.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common causes

  • A flat battery in the remote

  • The remote has lost its programming or needs re-paired with the motor

  • A worn or damaged remote, for example after being dropped

  • A power cut or tripped fuse

  • A fault with the receiver or the motor's control board

  • Blocked or misaligned safety sensors stopping the door

  • A mechanical fault, such as a snapped cable or broken spring, that the motor can't work against

Things you can try

Change the remote battery, check the power and fuse, and try the wall switch or a spare remote. If the door still won't move, or it starts and stops, don't keep pressing the button and don't force the door. That can strain the motor. Never try to adjust springs or cables yourself, as they're under heavy tension.

What we do

We'll test the remote, receiver, motor and the door itself to find the real cause. We can reprogram remotes, supply replacements, and repair or replace motors and control units. We'll always explain what's needed before we start, and all repairs come with our 2-year guarantee.

We're a family-run business based in Kirkintilloch, serving Glasgow, Kirkintilloch, Lenzie, Bishopbriggs, Bearsden, Milngavie, Stepps, Cumbernauld, Clarkston, Newton Mearns and Falkirk.
